#TakeMeHomeTuesday: Glitter and London are available, and foster homes are needed!

Hi Everyone, it's Tuesday, and that means it's rescue highlight day, and I have two cats from Itty Bitty Kitty that are available right now!  I love showing you available animals. Seeing these guys go to a good home makes me so happy!

This week I want to introduce you to Glitter and London.

Glitter is an adorable tortoise shell kitty. She's super sweet and friendly. Her coat really does look like glitter when the light hits it. She's also young, a little over a year old, so she'll be a part of your family for a long time.

Glitter doing what she does best, lounging in a cat tree.
I mean really, look at that face and those markings! I have a soft spot for this particular color pattern, and their personality really matches their unique coloring. She does really well with adults (children are not her thing), and can be alone or with other kitties.

London purrs like a fiend! He's dog like, and loves to be close to people. He's very laid back and super friendly.

He's camera shy, so he closes his eyes when you try to take a picture. He's between 1-2 years old and is super fuzzy and soft. He does well with people and pets.

If you're interested in adopting either of these kitties, please go to the IBK website and fill out an application. If you're willing to foster kittens or volunteer in some way, please click on this link  for more information. We desperately need people to take in a litter. They are usually adopted very quickly, so it isn't a long term thing (unless you want to keep the whole bunch!)

#TakeMeHomeTuesday - you know you want to adopt a kitty!

Hi Everyone, I'm back with more available kitties from Itty Bitty Kitty. If you are interested in adopting, donating, or volunteering, click on the link above!

Cinnamon and Pumpkin were adopted and returned to our care because they were too playful. Look at these guys, they're fun! They're young! They're kitties!
Cinnamon
Pumpkin
Cats with this coloration are lovely and very friendly. These guys need love and toys! They are goofballs and enjoy being companions. The adoption fee for each individual cat would be $50, but if you adopt them together, it's only $75! Consider taking them home together! They'll be a great addition to your home.

The next cat is Scout.
Scout

He's a floofy tuxedo kitty. He's likey a Maine Coon,  which is a very cuddly and loving breed, but they need to be brushed daily so they don't get matted. This guy was rescued from a kill shelter and he needs your love! He's regal and friendly!

Let me know if you have any questions!

#TakeMeHomeTuesday - Great news, and more awesome kitties available for adoption!

Hey everyone, I have great news. It looks like Itty Bitty Kitty may be getting a shelter shortly! This means we won't have to operate out of pet stores any longer, and we'll be able to rescue more animals!

This week we have three darling cats to highlight.

The first available cat is Timber.

It's he a cutie pie? He's laid back and super sweet, and would be a great addition to a home with another cat.  He is a kitten, so he will need extra attention and play time to let go of his energy.*

The next available cat is Shelby.

She is a goofy ball of energy! She loves attention and playing. She was rescued with Timber, but is not a litter mate. She does well with cats, families, and just about anyone. Again, she is high energy, so she will need to be played with to be sure that she doesn't destroy anything.*

* In case you haven't had one, kittens are known to climb curtains and play with everything. They also love you to bits and stick to you like glue once you bond, because you become their guardian. It's a lifetime bond - they can live for 20+ years, to be aware of this when adopting. Also, have teething toys (usually made of fabric) available, and a soft fuzzy blanket. The blanket keeps them warm, and toy gives them something to comfort them if they're uncomfortable. (My youngest cat still gnaws on my fingers while kneading a blanket and sitting in my lap- it's her way of telling me she loves me.)

The third kitty has been featured before. It's Benny!!

Benny is a lover boy. He wants to be held and petted and loved. He really enjoys other cats, and actually wanted to visit with the kittens in the cage above him. He will be your best buddy and likely cuddle with you if you're sitting down. He's also a big goofball, and likes to talk. I walk over to his cage and he mumbles in cat speak the entire time I'm cleaning and playing.

As always, follow the link at the top if you're interested in adopting any of the available cats. I post photos of them at the shelter site on Tuesdays on my instagram account, so feel free to ask any questions here or there.

New Jersey Festival of Ballooning: Up Up and Away!!

 New Jersey Festival of Ballooning!!!

Your Next Date Destination!

If you and your significant other are looking for a fun filled day or evening you should consider taking a trip to the New Jersey Festival of Ballooning at the Solberg Airport in Whitehouse NJ.  The Quickchek NJ Festival of Ballooning is the largest summertime hot air balloon and music festival in North America!!! Held annually, the festival features twice daily mass ascensions of over 100 special shapes and sport hot air balloons, concerts, food, vendors, crafts, fireworks, a balloon glow (evening), and a 5K run. There are also many local hotel accommodations if you would like to lengthen your stay. The hot air balloon ascensions are at 6am and 6pm each day of the festival. The timing helps ensure not only a breathtaking sunrise or sunset experience but is also the calmest time of day in terms of wind. The balloons will not be released if the weather is not adequate.

It has always been on my bucket list to go on a hot air balloon ride and this festival is a perfect opportunity to do so!

Prices and other information:

If you are considering taking your own ride to go up up and away during one of the mass ascensions you will need to order your ticket online for $225-$250 per rider. General admission to the festival is $25 from June 27th-July 23rd if purchased over the phone or online. General admission tickets at the gate can be purchased for $35.

The Bookstore Speakeasy a bit of the 20s in Bethlehem!

This a photo of the bar taken from their Facebook page. I'm not showing you anything else, because it would take away from the experience!

336 Adams Street
Bethlehem, PA  18015
610-867-1100 (you need to call to make a reservation)
Hours: Tue - Sat  5:00 pm - 2:00 am

The Speakeasy is located underneath an old school building. Years ago, it was a spaghetti restaurant, or so I've been told. When you walk in, you see a hostess stand and some bookshelves. The magic happens behind a curtain. When you walk into the back of the restaurant, you're transported into something out of the 1920's. The interior is dark wood and filled with lamps and vintage decor. The menu placed at each table is an upcycled book, something I thought was very cute given the name.

They serve expensive vintage cocktails ($14) and a variety of beers and wines ($7-20). Everything is tasty, and I recommend trying something fancy! The food is excellent, and there is a good enough variety to satisfy everyone in your party. I haven't tried their desserts, but I'm sure they're wonderful, too.

They have live music some nights (usually weekends) and the bands play vintage songs and dress in vintage clothing.  Depending on the night, you'll either find people dressed in fancy clothing or people in jeans. The crowd is unpredictable. I prefer dressing up when I go there because it just feels right!

I totally recommend going to The Bookstore for a fancy date night. They usually run Groupons, which makes the experience even more affordable!

Wonderful steaks, craft beers & lots of wines by the glass in modern, lounge-style environment aglow with neon lighting.  The bar area is sleek and trendy offering a modern yet sophisticated atmosphere. Corked Wine Bar and Steakhouse offers an enormous selection of wine from all over the world. The wines range in price substantially from $6 per glass to $35 per glass. There are also a long list of wines that are only available if purchasing the entire bottle. My fiancé and I had a wonderful dining experience both times we visited this restaurant. The foie gras was some of the best I have ever had. The foie gras was served atop a piece of French toast and topped with a blackberry compote. Both times we dined at Corked my fiancé’s steaks were cooked perfectly. I had two different seafood entrees and they were also very good.  Corked specializes in a variety of cuisine and even offers a variety of fish specials each Friday during lent so you can be sure there will be something on the menu for everyone. Corked will also be hosting a beer and wine brunch on May 3rd 2015 with Hijinx brewing company from Allentown PA. Date Night Ideas

Are you ever looking for something fun to do? Something that isn't the same old movie or dinner out? I highly suggest getting yourself out to do something like this.

The Tamaqua Community Art Center is Located
125 Pine St
Tamaqua, Pa 18252
(570) 668 - 1192
To see a calender of events
Tamaqua Community Arts Center runs Paint and Sip events 3 - 4 events a month.

OK let's be real here for a minute families or even just happy couples, "Date Night" can be fun, but sometimes it gets boring. We tend to do what we are comfortable with for my husband and myself it consists of a movie and dinner without our children being there, but conversation usually leads back to them in one form or another. Or its a group date to Buffalo Wild Wings to see a UFC fight night. We do not often do things that are out of our comfort zone. So for Valentine's Day this year I wanted to do something NEW something neither of us had done before. I had been hearing about these paint and sips that a bunch of my coworkers have been too, but was told that most of the time these were a bunch of women getting together. So when I heard about the couples one I was in I thought this is perfect something to do that is NEW!!!!!  It took a little time to convince my husband that we needed no actual artistic talents. We were both nervous neither of us claim to be artists, but we thought it would be something fun to do that we had never tried before. OH BOY am I glad we decided to give this a chance.
They started us with a basic sketch on a blank canvas and a palette of colors which if you asked they would help you  customize, as seen on  the right. The artist who was teaching us the techniques was a lot of fun and super helpful. She made us feel very comfortable.

There were several stages to the process each one a little harder as we went along, but the instructor was right there to help you if you felt you made a mistake. Really the painting is designed that there really is no mistake that cannot be fixed, but she would help you make it more cohesive looking.

This event included a candlelit dinner which of course I forgot to take a picture of, but it was a nice simple catered meal. To have a meal that is not interrupted by wearing someones food(I have 2 toddlers I am always wearing some sort of food), screaming, or idle chat about the various Disney princesses is always a treat, but to have one so romantically put together was very nice.

After dinner we finished the painting see pictures above there were so many steps and each one needed time between, so Tamaqua Art Center Provided an little Photo booth to play with in the break times..
As the simple couple next door looking for something new and interesting to do for a date night or  just something fun for yourself. Go check out the paint and sips at the Tamaqua Community Arts Center they always have great events going on there. We had a blast and are planning another one soon.
Finished product and acting silly .

Have a great time and take a sip for me.

The Blonde Leading the Blind

Have you ever seen that guy at a place that sells pet food and not only does he have a shopping cart, but it is practically overflowing with pet food? Not only is it overflowing, but the food isn’t even for one type of animal? I mean come on, what is this? Do you live on a farm or are you one of those crazy hoarders with fifty pets running around in the walls? Well, all joking aside, I have been “that guy” on more times than I can count. I am the proud owner of two dogs and two cats. My two dogs, Fidget and Coby, are 13 years old and my cats, Freddy and Nancy, are bout 5 and 6. I have had the dogs since they were puppies and I came to live with cats when my husband and I first started living together. It took a while for one of our cats to get used to the dogs, she still has her little kitty bitch fits and will whack one of the dogs, but apart from that, we are one big happy family.

Fidget on my skull bed, Coby and Nancy, Freddy and Nancy, Coby

My biggest concern has always been the dogs, and not just because I’ve had them since they were pups. Now that my dogs are getting up there in age, I start to worry more. The walks can’t be as long and the steps aren’t easy as they used to be, but none the less, they are doing fine. Or at least they were until this past January. This winter, I noticed that Fidget had dropped a significant amount of weight. He wouldn’t go up and down the stairs anymore and he was having accidents in the house. He was still eating regularly, but his thirst for water went up significantly. The next thing I noticed was his eyes were now cloudy. It didn’t take a rocket scientist to realize this dogs health was going down hill fast. He appeared to be blind and had something else wrong that we weren’t 100% sure of just yet. So, like any responsible pet owners, we took our sick critter to the vet.

Signs of Dog Diabetes from www.hillspet.com

The vet asked us all of the standard questions to figure out what was wrong with our dog. We told the doctor everything we had noticed. She confirmed that our dog was blind from cataracts, which we had already guessed. When we told her about the weight loss, thirst, and accidents she told us that it sounded like our dog was diabetic. She wanted to do a blood test to confirm this, so I got to watch three people hold my 56 pound mutt to get a blood sample. Let me tell you, this sucked. Not only is my dog not a huge fan of the vet, but now the poor blind dog can’t even see what’s comin! Within 24 hours we got the results from the blood test and they came back positive for diabetes. The next visit sucked.

Me (with a tan for once) and Fidget before cataracs and diabetes

When we returned to the vet, we were told what new habits we had to get into now that we have a diabetic dog. The first thing they told us was to change his diet. He needed high protein/low fat dog food twice a day. To top that off, he would now need a shot of insulin to follow meals. We were told to feed the dog twice a day as close to 12 hours apart as possible. We were starting with a small dose of insulin to see how that goes and that in order to give it to him, we needed to make sure he had at least 3 bites of food. No big deal right… oh wait. You mean I have to give the old, blind dog the injection. Awesome… NOT! To make matters more nerve racking, they vet had my husband and I practice on Fidget. In the office. With water. And two other vet assistants watching. I am sorry for all of those times I was nervous for having to give a speech in class, this tops all of those minor anxiety attacks. I decided to go first, especially since I knew my husband wasn’t going to volunteer to be Doctor Satan to our dog first. The room was getting hot, so I took off my coat. The vet grabbed my dog by his scruff, making a “tent” with his loose skin. She moved the hair to find his skin, stuck in the needle, and pressed down on the plunger. “See, nothing to it. You’re turn!” I’m sweating like I’m high in church. I fill the syringe, grab his fur, find his skin, and give my dog the injection of water. It was over before I could pee my pants and the dog didn’t even move. It was like he couldn’t feel a thing or if he could, it didn’t bother him. After my husband left, we felt better about giving the shot, but were still worried.

Fidget, Winter 2015

The next few weeks were an adjustment and were beyond frustrating. We were given the small dose so that we could gradually work our way up to the perfect amount of insulin for our dog. This didn’t happen over night. It took weeks and weeks of vet visits, different dog foods, and pee pads as far as the eye can see. There have been days where I come home and I wanted to cry or pull out my hair. It sucks to come home and clean up pee. It sucks to give your dog shots everyday and to have to change your work schedule to accommodate this. It sucks to have to carry the blind dog up and down steps to go to the vet. What doesn’t suck? Seeing your dog happy and wagging his tail because he is feeling better. Watching him slowly get on your bed when he hasn’t done that in months. Seeing your cat, Freddy, try to lead your blind dog to the backdoor.

Fidget playing it off that he is camera shy

Having a blind dog with diabetes hasn’t been a cake walk. There are good days and there are bad days. My friend Rich put it best when he said, “All of the happiness you get from your pets will make taking care of them when they get sick worth it.” Rich is right. I had 12 years with Fidget where he was there for me and now it is my turn to be there for him in a big way. He may be blind, he may have diabetes, but he is happy, and as long as his tail is still wagging I think we will be just fine.

I found this tag while looking on Amazon.com, just in case the blind dog gets loose.

Here are some of my tips for anyone with a diabetic critter:

1. Ask your vet about what food to buy. They will know more brands that Joe Blow at a big chain pet store who is just there stocking shelves.

2. If you can't find a certain dog food, go to a specialty store. They will know more about the products and are more likely to be able to get in what you need even if they don't carry it in the store.

3. Pee pads are good, but not for big spills. While pee pads caught more of my dogs accidents, they weren't nearly big enough to not leak. I'm sure these work better with small dogs. I still use them because they do make it easier to clean up accidents as opposed to mopping up lakes of urine.

4. Walmart has best pricing for insulin and needles. For 100 needles and a vile of insulin I play under $40. Plus, you get to cut the line because it's not for a human!

5. Weekly trips to the vet until you have your pets dosage just right are necessary and don't cost nearly as much as a regular visit.

6. Just breathe. You can do this! It does get better.

7. There are lots of sites that can help you if you have any questions about Dog Diabetes including Hills Pet and Pet Web MD.

Thanks for reading about my trials and tribulations with Doggie Diabetes.

May was Mental Health Awareness Month: Living with Panic and Anxiety

Hi everyone, in case you didn't know, May was Mental Health Awareness Month. Of course, I only found out about it at the end of the month, when people "came out" as having a mental illness. Today, I want to come out to you. I suffer from a panic and anxiety disorder that I was only diagnosed with recently. How do you know you suffer from either of these? Well let's see, I'll start with something simple. You over think and over analyze any criticism. You may worry about what people may think  of you, so maybe you don't leave the house except for work and comfortable activities. Big, loud places make you extremely anxious. You get unexplained chest pain and feel totally overwhelmed by life. You suffered a traumatic loss or event, and your grieving process is complicated.

In my case, I lost two family members within the course of a year. My grandfather passed away after suffering for three years. My father and I were his primary caregivers, even though he was in a nursing home, and we spent hours a day with him making sure he was well cared for and received attention. His loss left me sad and empty, but I began feeling better about six months after he died. In June of 2014, my mother died suddenly from sepsis and a massive stroke. To say our relationship was rocky was an understatement. After she died, I began having night terrors and panic attacks. I barely left the house because I couldn't deal with all of the input around me. I was empty and angry, and therapy only took some of the edge off. After months of suffering, I finally spoke to my doctor, who had a similar experience. She recommended cognitive behavioral therapy and medication. I now had someone who listened and gave me a way to refocus my energy and thoughts. It was okay to be anxious, it just couldn't control me. The medication slowly stopped the panic attacks. Two months later, I feel like a new person.

I decided to write this personal story because I wanted you to know that you're not alone. There are many avenues for help, and you can get free or very low cost assistance. Many people I know go to therapy and/or take medication. There is no stigma attached to taking care of yourself. Love yourself and get help if you need it. If you need to talk, feel free to message me.

Hugs,

Miss Shelly

#TakeMeHomeTuesday: Please meet Star and Benny

Hi everyone! I'm back again with two more rescue cats to highlight from Itty Bitty Kitty!

The first cat is Benny.

He's adorable. This picture doesn't do him justice!
He's a young stripy cat. He's totally adorable and ridiculous. When I walked over to his cage to initially meet him, I found him flopped over and kneading the air. I knew I was in trouble. I opened the door and picked him up, and he proceeded to climb up on my shoulders and onto my head, purring and kneading the whole time. He eventually flopped over into my arms, where patrons walked over to pet this amazingly docile cat. He remained in my lap for a good half hour, ignoring all of the dogs walking through with their guardians. He's a love bug and needs a good home.

Benny!

I mean look at him - he's a big bigger now, but he's a silly boy!

Next is Star.
This is her favorite position.

No, seriously.
Ok, maybe this is.

Just look at her!
Look into my eyes. You're feeling sleepy. I can make you cluck.

But seriously, Star is super sweet, sedate, and adorable. She's a gorgeous furball, and she needs a loving home. She just wants to flop and be petted. In fact, you may see her stay in the same spot all day soaking up the sun. That's just the kind of laid back kitty you'll get if you adopt her.

If you're interest in having a pet highlighted, contact me! I would love to work with your shelter!

#TakeMeHomeTuesday - Itty Bitty Kitty - Rescue Spotlight!

Rescue Spotlight: Itty Bitty Kitty
First a little back story: When my parents moved to PA in June of2003, my dad decided that he needed a kitten of his own. Lancelot, a polydactyl tuxedo, known as Morpheus at the time, weaseled his way into his heart. I had recently moved to MA, and wanted a cat of my own. In October, I came home to visit, and his grumpy littermate, named Neo, wasn’t yet adopted. Kathy, who worked with Peaceable Kingdom at the time, brought Neo (who is now known as Loki) to meet me. Loki purred at me and chilled in my lap. After an 8 hour drive, we settled into my apartment, and we’ve been best buddies ever since.
Flash forward a few years, and Kathy started a fo ster only organization known as Itty Bitty Kitty. They’re currently raising money for a shelter, since the cats are either housed at a home or in a Pet Store.  Those of us who volunteer go to the stores, answer questions, play with the cats and take care of their enclosures. It’s not the best environment, to be sure.  If you’re interested in helping at all, please click on the link above!
Let me highlight two of the older kitties we currently in the mix, Big Dude and Jill.
Big Dude (https://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/31419585) is adorable and a big love bug. All he wants to do is eat treats and catnip. He loves playing with toys, being brushed, and petted. He just needs a home where he will be showered with affection and love!
Jill (https://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/31967773) was recently returned. This is her second time coming back to IBK. She’s super sweet and just needs a forever home!
If you’re interested in adopting one of these sweet kitties, just click on the link above to get more information and contact IBK. We’re always looking for volunteers and foster families too!

Bingo and Bongo
They're lovely black kitties! Who doesn't want a pretty black kitty??

Bingo

These lovely girls need to be adopted together, since they're very attached.

You are a Priority and Yes It’s Ok!!

By: Ceci Blu

Definition of Priority – “(1) the right to take precedence or to precede before others.”

“(2) the fact or condition of being regarded or treated as more important.”

I preceded this post with the definition of priority for a reason. We as a society have many responsibilities, it may be things like family, work, or social etc. We are also a bit judgmental, and I don’t mean this in a way that is insensitive or mean. What I am saying is that we compare our priorities with the way another prioritizes and say, “well I would never do that over this”. I am guilty of this as much as the next person. As a society we tend to put ourselves at the end of our never ending list or not on it at all in my personal case. Looking at those that do prioritize themselves, sometimes we may judge them and say well don’t you think maybe this was more important than going to the salon. I say GOOD FOR YOU!!! We should learn a lesson from that person. How can we say that it is not important for them to do that?

I am a wife, mom, and caretaker. I have an amazing family, but up until recently I have been so busy taking care of everyone else, and all of my other priorities that I forgot that sometimes I need to be taken care of too. I am here to tell you even as I am learning this myself.

Its Ok to be YOUR PRIORITY!!!

We often get lost in our families, friends, work, and home life that when it comes time to make time for ourselves we are too tired or have no money and the excuses can be endless. Trust me I have used them all and I’m sure that there are more that I haven’t even thought of yet. I have an amazing husband who often gets upset with me because I forget to take care of myself. My general priority list looks like this:

  • Wife/ Mom/ Caretaker

  • Family (Parents, Siblings, Nieces, Nephews)

  • Work( Day job, and other Jobs I do in my spare time)

  • Bills (YUCK!!!!!)

If yours looks similar to mine, let us make a change. I am trying to make this change in my life. The logic behind this is that if you aren’t happy how can you be at your best you. We all need a little bit of time to ourselves to get back to zero. Getting back to zero is basically centering yourself as if you are doing YOGA for your priorities. Even if that means you take a few minutes each day to sit and think by yourself, read a book, or just doing something you enjoy. It helps to remember that you enjoyed things before life got in the way. Making yourself a priority is healthy for your body, soul, and mind. It helps you to remember that you were once important and still are important to many people. Make yourself a priority list and see where you fall. I challenge you to move yourself up a space each time you think about rearranging your priorities soon you will be near the top ( let’s be honest most of us won’t make it to the top, but to be on it is the goal) of your list. Hopefully realize that it has made you a better person for yourself and in the end for your family and friends too. Don’t judge how someone sets their priorities who are we to say what their priorities should be?

Hello and welcome to Sinister Rouge Pin Up & More!

The idea is pretty simple, to create an online place to showcase passionate people and what they do, to bring information to our readers in our areas of expertise so that they can get to know us and what we do.  Of course, pictures of pretty ladies in between never hurt anyone!

I have had a passion for pin up since that day in grade school when I stumbled across Marilyn Monroe.  Those soft lines, the ease of which she posed, the idea of catching a beauty in mid-laugh, or what looks like being totally at ease in an extremely difficult pose, the fantasy and beautiful illusion it creates, I was in love.

I’m a fangirl all the way, I am passionate about what I love and it shows in what I create.  My products and their names are inspired by pin up, music, TV shows, movies, and books…I love seeing that spark in someone’s eye when they recognize the references.

Our packaging has been created with a pin up image in mind from the start.  When it became time for me to start promoting our products with a photo shoot, there was no question it was going to be pin up themed.

The second we began shooting, I felt at home, I was in love with the process and being a part of creating those images.  The pride I took in staging every last detail, then seeing the results was so gratifying; I have become addicted to creating the pin up images I always wanted to see.

This concept started as a way to showcase those images, give me a reason to continue shooting and showcase artisans and crafters that are as passionate about what they do as I am.  I also wanted a place where multiple genres could cross over and get exposure from like minded people that you may not have reached any other way.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned through this process, it’s that even if we may not have much in common, we can all recognize and respect that fiery passion in another artist and creator, whether it’s our style or not.  I want us all to be able to come together here to showcase that passion and support each other the way only other creative, passionate people can…and share that with the world.

The only rule for participating: Opposing thoughts and discussions are always welcome, but spewing negativity and trolling will not be tolerated.  We're here to support and be constructive in our criticism, not bash others for what they do.
Thank you for stopping by!
